Hyde Street Pier—Re-live the “Golden Age of Sailing”

in FREE and Budget, From the Mobile App, Historic San Francisco, Kid-Friendly, Maritime

If your pulse quickens at sight of a ship under sail, you’ll want to drop anchor at this amazing open-air nautical museum. The Pier is home to a wide range of antique ships—National Historic Landmarks—that you can board and explore (Pier entrance is free, but there’s a small fee to board the ships).

There is far more to the Pier than its historic boats, though. Take a guided ranger tour of the historic ships Balclutha, Eureka and Hercules. Chat with ship-builders. Sign up for a boat restoration class. Help raise the Balclutha’s sails. Embark on a self-guided walking tour. And if you’re traveling with kids, they’ll enjoy earning a Junior Ranger badge.

Hyde Street Pier is one of three locations in the SF Maritime National Historic Park. The other two: the Maritime Museum and the SFMNHP Visitor Center.

Tip: On the first Saturday night of every month, the Pier hosts a free concert of rousing sea chanteys.
